The four states
Pohnpei is the capital island and the easiest first stop, with waterfalls, hikes, surf, atoll day trips and the most hotels and restaurants. Just off its east coast lies Nan Madol, the UNESCO listed basalt city that is the country's greatest monument.
Chuuk Lagoon is the world famous wreck diving site, where a Japanese fleet sank in 1944. It is best for divers and history lovers.
Yap is the most traditional state, with stone money banks, stone paths, village dance and manta rays. It is reached through Guam rather than the island hopper route.
Kosrae is a quiet, green single island with healthy reefs, the Lelu ruins, mangrove canoe trips and Sunday choirs.
Choosing your route
For a first trip of ten days to two weeks, many travellers fly the island hopper between Guam and Honolulu and stop at Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae. Divers who want manta rays add Yap. Flights may not run every day, so plan your stops around the schedule and use the free trip planner to fit it together.
