The capital atoll
Majuro is where international flights land and where most visitors stay. The downtown area known as DUD (Delap, Uliga and Djarrit) holds the government, the Alele Museum, the main hotels, shops and restaurants, all strung along one road beside a huge lagoon.
The quiet end of Majuro
Laura, at the far western end of the same road, is greener, calmer and more rural. It has Majuro's best known beach, small farms, breadfruit groves and the highest natural point on the atoll, which is still only a few metres above the sea.
The easy outer atoll
Arno Atoll lies just across the water from Majuro. It is the simplest way to see traditional outer island life: villages, coconut palms, pandanus weaving, fishing and empty white beaches.
The military atoll
Kwajalein and Ebeye are two islands on the world's largest lagoon by some measures. Kwajalein is a restricted US Army base; Ebeye next door is one of the most densely populated places in the Pacific and a striking contrast.
The wreck divers' lagoon
Bikini Atoll was the site of the US nuclear tests from 1946. Its lagoon holds the sunken test fleet, including an aircraft carrier and a Japanese battleship, a bucket list dive reached only on rare organised trips.
Planning your route
Most first-timers spend four to seven nights on Majuro, with a day in Laura and, if time allows, an overnight on Arno. Ebeye and Bikini are specialist trips that need advance planning and permission.
