The capital and the Roman west
Most trips begin in Tripoli, the seaside capital with its Ottoman medina, the Red Castle and the main working airport. Two hours east lies Leptis Magna, one of the greatest Roman cities anywhere, and an hour west is the theatre of Sabratha.
The east
Benghazi is Libya's second city and the gateway to Cyrenaica. From there, the Greek city of Cyrene and its harbour Apollonia sit on and below the green hills of the Jebel Akhdar.
The Sahara
Near the Algerian and Tunisian borders, the oasis of Ghadames is a white maze of covered lanes and painted houses, reached through the Berber villages of the Nafusa Mountains.
Before you choose
Western governments currently advise against all travel to Libya, and travel between the east and west may need separate permissions. Visitors travel with licensed operators. Use the free trip planner to shape a realistic route.
