Guyana destinations

Guyana destinations: where to go

Guyana is a country of rainforest, rivers and savannah, with almost everyone living on the narrow Atlantic coast. Start in the capital, then head inland to the falls, the forest and the grasslands. Here is how the main destinations fit together.

The capital

Georgetown is where your trip begins: wooden landmarks, Stabroek Market, the seawall, botanical gardens and the best food in the country.

The great waterfall

Kaieteur Falls is a single, enormous drop in the middle of the rainforest, usually visited on a small plane day trip from Ogle.

The rainforest

Iwokrama is a protected forest with a canopy walkway, a river lodge and excellent chances of seeing jaguars.

The savannah

The Rupununi is the wild southwest of ranches, Indigenous villages, giant otters and giant anteaters.

The river

The Essequibo River and Bartica offer island resorts, river beaches, a Dutch fort and the Easter regatta.

Putting it together

A first trip of ten to fourteen days might combine Georgetown, a Kaieteur flight, a few days at Iwokrama and the Rupununi, and a river weekend. Use the free trip planner to shape your route.
