The classic Ecuador trip
Highlands, rainforest, then islands
Most first trips start with a few days in Quito to adjust to the altitude, then head north to Otavalo's market or south along the Avenue of the Volcanoes to Baños and Cotopaxi. Many add a few nights in an Amazon lodge, a slow stop in Cuenca and finish with the Galápagos, where the wildlife has no fear of people.
- Quito's colonial centre and the Middle of the World
- Hot springs and waterfalls around Baños
- Canoe trips from an Amazon lodge
- Snorkelling with sea lions in the Galápagos

A note from our founder
A note from our founder
My first time visiting Kenya, I was genuinely surprised with how fast it began feeling like home. The people are so friendly, the food is delicious and familiar, and the accommodations are modern and upscale.
During my travels throughout the continent, I commonly hear tourists share stories about being scammed or taken advantage of, which is both frustrating and disheartening.
Living in Kenya for the last 2 years, I have had the great fortune to meet a network of wonderful Kenyans who have continuously help guide my family's journey. Their shared knowledge has not only greatly enhanced our overall experience here, but it has also saved us tons of time, energy, and resources.
With BlissPoint Travel, my hope is to build a global community that is willing to share useful, uncommon knowledge so that we can all blissfully enjoy the wonders our world has to offer.
Questions we hear most
Is Ecuador safe for tourists?
Most visits to Quito, Cuenca, Baños, Otavalo, the Amazon lodges and the Galápagos go smoothly, but Ecuador has seen a sharp rise in gang crime since 2023, mostly around ports and parts of the coast such as Guayaquil and Esmeraldas. Read your government's travel advice, watch for states of emergency or curfews, and take normal city precautions.
Do I need a visa for Ecuador?
Many passport holders, including those from the US, Canada, the UK and the EU, can visit for tourism without a visa, but rules vary by passport and change. Check Ecuador's foreign ministry site or your nearest Ecuadorian consulate before you book, and carry proof of onward travel and health insurance.
What currency does Ecuador use?
Ecuador uses the US dollar. Small notes are much easier to spend than large ones, and many shops refuse the biggest notes, so bring or withdraw small denominations.
How many days do I need in Ecuador?
Ten days covers Quito, a few days in the highlands and a short Amazon stay. Add five to eight days for the Galápagos, or slow down in Cuenca and the south if you have three weeks.
Will the altitude affect me in Quito?
Quito sits at about 2,850 metres, so many people feel breathless or get headaches on the first day. Take it easy, drink water, limit alcohol and plan gentle sightseeing before any big hikes.
When is the best time to visit Ecuador?
Ecuador is a year round destination. June to September is drier in the Andes, December to May brings warmer seas and calmer water in the Galápagos, and the Amazon is wet all year.
