Odense and Funen: Hans Christian Andersen country

Odense is the third largest city in Denmark and the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, whose fairy tales are known worldwide. It sits on Funen, a gentle, green island between Zealand and Jutland, often called the garden of Denmark. Beyond the city you find Renaissance castles, harbour towns, apple orchards and a scatter of small islands reached by ferry, ideal for slow travel.

Why go

Funen is where Denmark feels most like a storybook. Odense combines a modern city centre with crooked lanes of low, colourful houses, and the island beyond is made for cycling between manors, farm shops and beaches. It is right on the main rail line between Copenhagen and Jutland, so it is easy to add a night or two without detours.

Odense's sights

The **H.C. Andersen House**, reopened in 2021 in a striking building by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, is an imaginative museum that brings the tales to life, with a garden and a children's area called **Ludorama**. Next door is the small yellow house where Andersen is said to have been born, in the old quarter around **Hans Jensens Stræde**, one of the prettiest streets in town. His **Childhood Home** is a short walk away. **Odense Cathedral**, also called St Canute's, holds the remains of a Danish king murdered in 1086. **Den Fynske Landsby**, the Funen Village, is an open air museum of farms and cottages on the river, and **Odense Zoo** is one of the country's best. The composer Carl Nielsen also came from Funen, and a museum in town covers his life.

Egeskov Castle

About forty minutes south, **Egeskov Castle** is a fairy tale Renaissance water castle standing in a lake, with gardens, mazes, a treetop walk and big collections of vintage cars and planes. It is one of the most visited castles in Denmark and a perfect family day. Check opening months on the official site, as it is mainly open spring to autumn.

Svendborg and the islands

**Svendborg** is a harbour town on the south coast with old wooden ships, cafés and ferries to the islands. **Tåsinge** has the grand manor of Valdemars Slot. **Ærø** is a car free feeling island of cobbled towns, especially **Ærøskøbing**, with its hollyhock lined lanes, and it is a favourite of cyclists. **Langeland** has long beaches and quiet roads. The **Øhavsstien**, the Archipelago Trail, is a long walking route along the south Funen coast.

Food and drink

Funen is famous for produce: apples, strawberries, cheeses and pork. Look for farm stands with honesty boxes along country roads, smokehouses near the coast and traditional Danish lunch restaurants in Odense. Odense also has a lively street food hall, and Funen's breweries and fruit wineries are worth a tasting.

Where to stay

In **Odense**, stay in the centre near the cathedral and the Andersen quarter. For the islands, base yourself in **Svendborg**, or in a guesthouse or holiday cottage on Ærø or Tåsinge for a slower stay.

Getting around

Trains from Copenhagen to Odense take about ninety minutes across the Great Belt Bridge. Within Odense, walk or ride the **Odense Letbane** light rail. Local trains run to Svendborg, buses reach Egeskov, and ferries leave Svendborg for Ærø. Funen is flat and bike friendly, with signed routes.

Good to know

Funen is ideal for a slow trip: plan fewer stops and more time on the ferries, beaches and bike paths. Rural buses can be infrequent on weekends, so check timetables a day ahead. Many island cafés and smaller museums open only from spring to autumn, and July is the busiest month.
