Cameroon destinations: where to go

Cameroon packs rainforest, beaches, volcanoes and royal kingdoms into one country. Start here to see how the port city, the capital, the coast and the highlands fit together, and which areas current travel advice asks you to avoid.

The port city

Most international flights land in Douala, Cameroon's largest city and economic engine on the Wouri estuary. It is hot, humid and busy, with grand old colonial buildings in Bonanjo, the craft stalls of the Marché des Fleurs, a strong contemporary art scene and the nightlife of Rue de la Joie.

The capital

Yaoundé sits on seven green hills about four hours inland. It is calmer and cooler than Douala, with the National Museum, the Reunification Monument, the art collection on Mont Fébé and the primate sanctuary at Mefou nearby.

The beaches

Kribi is Cameroon's favourite beach town, with golden sand, fresh seafood and the Lobé Falls, which drop straight into the Atlantic. It is the gateway to Campo Ma'an National Park.

The highlands and kingdoms

The cool, hilly West region is home to the Bamoun kingdom at Foumban and the Bamileke chiefdoms around Bafoussam, Bandjoun and Dschang, with crater lakes and waterfalls in between.

The volcano coast

Limbe and Buea sit on the slopes of Mount Cameroon, with black sand beaches, a botanic garden and the trail to West Africa's highest peak. The South West region is under strict government travel advice, so check it carefully before you plan.

Areas to avoid

Most governments advise against travel to the Far North, parts of the North and East regions near the borders, and the North West and South West regions. Plan your route around the current advice and use the free trip planner to shape it.
