The capital
Almost every trip begins in Luanda, a sprawling, energetic city on a wide bay. It has the main airport, the Ilha beach strip, the Fortress of São Miguel, the slavery museum and the best restaurants and nightlife in the country.
Waterfalls in the north east
A long day's drive east of the capital, Kalandula Falls is one of the largest waterfalls in Africa by volume, with the strange black rocks of Pungo Andongo close by. Malanje is the base town.
The central coast
Benguela and Lobito are twin coastal towns with pastel colonial streets, a long sandspit of seafood restaurants and some of the best beaches in the country, including Baía Azul.
The highlands and the south
Cool, green Lubango sits on a plateau with the Cristo Rei statue, the Tundavala gap and the famous zigzag road of Serra da Leba. Below it lies Namibe, a quiet desert coast with welwitschia plants, dunes and Iona National Park.
How to combine them
With a week, pair Luanda with Kalandula Falls. With ten days to two weeks, add a flight to Lubango and drive down Serra da Leba to Namibe, then return via Benguela. Tell us your dates in the free trip planner and shape a route that fits.
