Benguela and Lobito: beaches, seafood and colonial streets

Benguela and Lobito sit half an hour apart on Angola's central coast, sharing an airport at Catumbela between them. Benguela is the older, prettier town of acacia shaded streets and colonial facades; Lobito is a port city with the Restinga, a long sandspit of beaches and seafood. Together they make the most relaxed stop in the country.

Why visit

After Luanda, the central coast feels calm. The pace is slower, the beaches are cleaner and the seafood is excellent. Benguela was founded by the Portuguese in 1617 and was a major slave trading port, so the history runs deep, but today it is a gentle town for walking and eating. Lobito, built around a natural harbour, is the Atlantic end of the Benguela Railway, which runs inland to the Congo border and has been revived as a trade corridor.

Benguela town

Walk the central streets around the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Pópulo, one of the oldest churches in Angola, and the colonial era buildings painted in faded pinks and yellows. The Praia Morena seafront is where locals gather at sunset, with simple bars and grilled fish. The Museu Nacional de Arqueologia, in an old slave holding building, is small but interesting.

Baía Azul and the southern beaches

About twenty kilometres south of Benguela, Baía Azul is a wide, sheltered bay of clear blue water and pale sand, and arguably the best beach in Angola. Nearby Baía Farta is a working fishing town, and Caotinha and the Praia do Binga beaches are quieter still. Weekdays are almost empty.

Lobito and the Restinga

The Restinga is a narrow sandspit several kilometres long, with the bay on one side and the ocean on the other. Restaurants, beach bars and hotels line it, and it is the best place for a long seafood lunch or a sunset drink. The old Lobito railway station and the port are worth a look for train lovers.

Catumbela

Between the two towns, Catumbela has a small fort, the Forte de São Pedro, and a historic bridge over the Catumbela river. The airport here makes the whole area easy to reach by air from Luanda.

Food

This is seafood country. Look for grilled garoupa, lobster, prawns and caldeirada (fish stew), served with funje or rice. Benguela is also known for cacusso fish from the rivers and for strong local coffee.

Getting there

TAAG and other domestic airlines fly from Luanda to Catumbela in about an hour. The road from Luanda takes most of a day along the coast via Sumbe, and can be slow in places. In town, use taxis, ride-hailing or arrange a driver through your hotel for beach days.

Where to stay

Stay on the Restinga in Lobito for beach life, or in central Benguela for walking and old town atmosphere. Baía Azul has a couple of resort style options for a quieter stay.

Tips for your visit

Weekends are busy on the Restinga and at Baía Azul, as families drive in from both towns, so go on a weekday for empty beaches. Bring cash, as many beach restaurants and stalls do not take cards. The sun is strong even when the sky is hazy, so pack sunscreen and a hat. As everywhere in Angola, avoid walking alone after dark and use a taxi or app ride back to your hotel. In the cool dry season the water can feel chilly, while from November to April the sea is warmer and the beaches feel truly tropical.
