Ha Long Bay: how to choose a cruise and see the bay well

Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage seascape of nearly two thousand limestone islands and pillars rising from emerald water in the Gulf of Tonkin. Legend says a dragon formed them as it plunged into the sea. Most travellers see it on an overnight cruise from Hanoi, and neighbouring Lan Ha Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay offer the same beauty with fewer boats.

Why go

Few views in Asia match a misty morning on Ha Long Bay, with tall wooded karsts fading into the distance in every direction. A cruise lets you slow down: kayaking through hidden lagoons, swimming from the boat, exploring caves, watching the sunset from the deck and waking to calm water and fishing boats. It is one of those places that looks just like the photographs, and it is easy to reach from Hanoi.

Ha Long, Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long

Ha Long Bay proper is the most famous and the busiest, with large cruise boats departing from Tuan Chau and Hon Gai. Its classic sights are Sung Sot (Surprise) Cave, Ti Top Island with its viewpoint and tiny beach, and the bays around Luon Cave. Lan Ha Bay, to the south beside Cat Ba Island, has similar scenery, more sandy coves and generally fewer boats. Bai Tu Long Bay, to the northeast, is the quietest of the three and has wilder, less visited islands. All three are part of the same limestone world.

Choosing a cruise

Cruises run as day trips, one night or two nights. A day trip means a long return drive for a short time on the water, so one night is the sweet spot, and two nights lets you reach further corners. Boats range from simple to very comfortable. When choosing, look at the route as well as the cabin: itineraries that include Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long usually feel less crowded. Check what is included, such as kayaks, transfers from Hanoi and meals, and read recent reviews for safety, food and how the crew treats the environment. Book through a licensed operator rather than the cheapest street offer.

Cat Ba Island

Cat Ba is the largest island in the area, with a national park of forest trails, the Hospital Cave from the war, small beaches and a lively harbour town. It makes a good independent base for Lan Ha Bay boat and kayak trips, and is reached by bus and ferry from Hanoi or Hai Phong.

Weather and safety

The bay can be beautiful in any season, but each has its character. Spring and autumn are the most reliable. Winter brings mist and cool air, which is atmospheric but can hide the views. Summer is hot and good for swimming but falls within the typhoon season, when the authorities may suspend all cruises at short notice. Reputable operators will refund or rebook; check their policy before paying. Always wear a life jacket while kayaking and follow crew instructions.

Responsible travel

Tourism has put pressure on the bay. Many floating fishing villages were resettled on land, and the authorities limit routes and numbers in parts of the bay. Choose operators that avoid single use plastics, do not throw waste overboard and respect the rules on where boats may go. Do not buy coral or shells.

Getting there

The expressway from Hanoi takes around two and a half hours, and most cruises include a shuttle bus from the Old Quarter. Van Don International Airport, northeast of Ha Long City, has some domestic flights. Ha Long City itself has a cable car, the Sun World theme park and beaches, but most visitors spend their time on the water.

Questions about Ha Long Bay

Is a day trip to Ha Long Bay worth it?

It works if you are short on time, but you spend around five hours on the road for a few hours on the water. An overnight cruise is far more relaxing and shows the bay at sunset and dawn.

Is Lan Ha Bay better than Ha Long Bay?

The scenery is very similar. Lan Ha Bay usually has fewer boats and more swimming beaches, which is why many travellers prefer cruises that include it.

Can cruises be cancelled for weather?

Yes. During storms and typhoon warnings the port authorities stop boats from sailing. Check your operator's cancellation and refund policy before you book.

Can I swim in Ha Long Bay?

Yes, at designated beaches and from many boats when the crew allows it. Water quality is best away from the busy ports, another reason to choose a quieter route.
