The big city
Most trips begin in Dubai. Ride an abra across the creek, wander the Al Fahidi lanes and the spice and gold souqs, then see the other Dubai: Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Mall, the beaches of Jumeirah and the Marina. Give it three or four days, and add a desert evening.
The capital
Abu Dhabi is calmer and more cultural. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Louvre Abu Dhabi, Qasr Al Watan and the museums of Saadiyat Island are the reasons to come, along with the Corniche beaches and the theme parks of Yas Island. Two days is a good start.
The garden city
Inland on the Oman border, Al Ain is the UAE's green heart: a UNESCO listed date palm oasis, mud brick forts, ancient tombs at Hili and the drive up Jebel Hafeet. It is a peaceful day trip from Abu Dhabi or Dubai, or a relaxed overnight.
The cultural emirate
Next door to Dubai, Sharjah is the place for museums, restored heritage houses, the Blue Souq and the art spaces of Al Mureijah. It is conservative and alcohol free, and rewards anyone curious about Arab and Islamic culture.
Mountains and quiet beaches
In the north, Ras Al Khaimah has the country's highest peak at Jebel Jais, the world's longest zipline, beach resorts, an abandoned pearling village and fewer crowds. From there, the Hajar mountains lead on to Fujairah and the east coast for snorkelling and calm sea.
Putting it together
A first week often looks like four nights in Dubai, two in Abu Dhabi with a day trip to Al Ain, and a final night in the desert or the mountains. Distances are short and roads are excellent, so the bigger question is the heat: plan outdoor days between November and March.
