Tanzania destinations: where to go

Tanzania is big, and the best trips focus on a few places done well. Start here to see how the safari parks of the north, Africa's highest mountain, the spice islands and the busy coast fit together.

The northern safari circuit

Most first trips centre on the north. Arusha is the gateway, with coffee farms and its own national park. From there, roads lead to Ngorongoro Crater, the wildlife-packed volcanic caldera, and on to the Serengeti, home of the Great Migration.

The mountain

Mount Kilimanjaro rises above the town of Moshi. It is a trek, not a technical climb, and with enough days fit walkers can reach Africa's highest point.

The coast and islands

Zanzibar offers Stone Town's history and long white beaches, the perfect finish to a safari. Dar es Salaam is the country's largest city, its main airport and the ferry port for the islands.

How to combine them

A classic two-week trip runs Arusha, Tarangire or Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro, the Serengeti, then a flight to Zanzibar. Climbers often add Kilimanjaro first and the beach after. Family visits often start in Dar es Salaam. Shape your own route with our free trip planner, and explore restaurants, markets and stays on our places to visit list.
