Why go
Cluj is less about headline sights and more about atmosphere. It is the city where you sit in a courtyard café, wander into a gallery in a former paintbrush factory and stay out late in a ruin style bar. It also has excellent flight connections, so it works well as the first or last stop of a Transylvania loop.
The centre
**Unirii Square** is dominated by **St Michael's Church**, a tall Gothic church, and the equestrian statue of Matthias Corvinus, the Hungarian king born in Cluj. The **Banffy Palace** on the square houses the National Museum of Art. A short walk away, **Avram Iancu Square** holds the **Orthodox Cathedral** and the **National Theatre**, a grand building that also hosts the opera.
Climb **Cetatuia Hill** at sunset for views over the rooftops, then walk down to the **Central Park** with its lake and casino building. The **Alexandru Borza Botanical Garden** is one of the finest in the region, with a Japanese garden and glasshouses.
Culture
The **Ethnographic Museum of Transylvania** has an indoor collection in town and an open air section in the Hoia forest. The **Fabrica de Pensule**, a former brush factory, hosts independent galleries and studios. **Hoia Baciu forest**, on the edge of town, is famous for its eerie twisted trees and ghost stories, and makes a fun walk.
Festivals
**Untold**, held in early August, is one of Europe's largest electronic music festivals, and **Electric Castle**, in July at Banffy Castle in nearby Bontida, mixes rock, electronic and art. The **Transilvania International Film Festival** in June fills cinemas and squares. Book accommodation early for all three.
Day trips
**Salina Turda**, about forty minutes away, is a vast old salt mine turned into an underground park, with a Ferris wheel, a boating lake and a mini golf course deep below ground. Bring a warm layer, as it stays cool all year. The **Turda Gorge** nearby is a great short hike.
The **Apuseni mountains** to the west have caves, including the **Scarisoara ice cave**, karst plateaus and wooden villages. To the north, the road leads to **Maramures**, famous for its tall wooden churches, carved gates and the **Merry Cemetery** of Sapanta with its painted, humorous gravestones. Allow at least two nights there.
Food and drink
Cluj is one of the best places in Romania for modern food, with bistros reworking Transylvanian dishes, speciality coffee and craft beer. Try varza a la Cluj, a layered dish of cabbage, minced meat and rice, and Hungarian influenced dishes like goulash and langos.
Where to stay
Stay in the old centre between Unirii Square and the Somes river so you can walk everywhere. The Grigorescu and Gheorgheni districts are quieter, with easy bus links. During festivals prices rise sharply and rooms sell out, so book early.
Practical tips
Cluj is safe and easy, but nightlife streets can be loud. Buses and trolleybuses take contactless cards, and ride apps work well. Use the free trip planner to fit Cluj and Maramures into your route.
When to go
Late spring and early autumn are the most comfortable months, with mild weather and fewer crowds. Summer brings festivals and busy terraces, while winter is cold but cosy, with a Christmas market on Unirii Square.
