The classic North Macedonia trip
Skopje, Matka, Ohrid and Bitola
Most first trips start with two or three nights in Skopje, with a half day at Matka Canyon and an evening in the Old Bazaar. From there it is a scenic drive or bus ride through Mavrovo National Park to Ohrid, where three or four nights let you see the old town, the monastery of Saint Naum and the lakeside villages. Finish in Bitola for its café street and the ruins of Heraclea Lyncestis, or head east to taste wine in Tikveš. Eight to ten days covers the highlights at an easy pace.
- The Old Bazaar and Stone Bridge in Skopje
- Kayaking or a boat ride in Matka Canyon
- The Church of Saint John at Kaneo above Lake Ohrid

A note from our founder
A note from our founder
My first time visiting Kenya, I was genuinely surprised with how fast it began feeling like home. The people are so friendly, the food is delicious and familiar, and the accommodations are modern and upscale.
During my travels throughout the continent, I commonly hear tourists share stories about being scammed or taken advantage of, which is both frustrating and disheartening.
Living in Kenya for the last 2 years, I have had the great fortune to meet a network of wonderful Kenyans who have continuously help guide my family's journey. Their shared knowledge has not only greatly enhanced our overall experience here, but it has also saved us tons of time, energy, and resources.
With BlissPoint Travel, my hope is to build a global community that is willing to share useful, uncommon knowledge so that we can all blissfully enjoy the wonders our world has to offer.
Questions we hear most
Is North Macedonia safe to visit?
North Macedonia is generally safe for visitors, with low levels of serious crime against tourists. The main risks are road safety, petty theft in busy places, winter air pollution in Skopje and mountain weather. Read your own government's travel advice before you go.
What is the capital of North Macedonia?
Skopje, in the north of the country on the Vardar river, about twenty minutes by road from Skopje International Airport. It is the hub for buses and trains across the country.
Do I need a visa for North Macedonia?
Many passports, including those of the EU, the UK, the United States, Canada and Australia, currently get visa-free short stays, but the rules vary by nationality. Check the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of North Macedonia website for your passport before you book.
What currency does North Macedonia use?
The Macedonian denar. Cards work in most city hotels, restaurants and supermarkets, but carry denars for buses, bakeries, markets, taxis and villages. Euros are sometimes accepted informally, but paying in denars is simpler.
How many days do I need in North Macedonia?
A week covers Skopje, Matka Canyon and Ohrid comfortably. Ten days lets you add Bitola, Mavrovo or a wine day in Tikveš without rushing.
Is North Macedonia expensive?
It is one of the better value countries in Europe. Food, local transport and guesthouses are affordable, while lakefront hotels in Ohrid in high summer cost more. Our money and costs advice helps you budget.
