Why visit Blantyre
Blantyre has more history on show than Lilongwe and a livelier, more compact feel. It is the natural hub for the southern half of Malawi, which holds many of the country's best experiences: Liwonde and Majete for wildlife, Zomba Plateau for cool forest walks, and the Thyolo and Mulanje tea country for hiking and plantation stays.
Mandala House
Built in 1882 for the African Lakes Corporation, Mandala House is believed to be the oldest building in Malawi. Its wide verandas now hold an art gallery, the Society of Malawi library and archive, and a café that is one of the most pleasant spots in the city for coffee and cake.
St Michael and All Angels Church
This redbrick church at the old Blantyre Mission was built in the 1880s and 1890s by Scottish missionaries and local builders with no formal architectural training. Its domes and arches are remarkable for the time and place, and it is still an active church, so visit respectfully and outside services if you can.
Museums and markets
The Museum of Malawi at Chichiri covers history, traditional crafts, transport and the masks of the Gule Wamkulu secret society. Blantyre Market, in the city centre, and the much bigger Limbe Market in the twin town of Limbe are where locals shop for produce, fish, fabric and household goods. Go in daylight, keep your phone and wallet secure and expect to be greeted warmly.
Hills and walks
Blantyre sits among hills, and several give easy walks. Michiru Mountain Conservation Area, on the north western edge of the city, has forest trails and good birding. Mount Soche and Ndirande rise above town, but walk them with a local guide or a group rather than alone.
Tea country
The Thyolo district, south east of Blantyre, is covered in rolling tea estates. Satemwa Tea Estate offers tastings and walks and has a colonial planter's house, Huntingdon House, that takes guests. It makes a calm, green overnight stop on the way to Mulanje.
Zomba Plateau
An hour or so north, the former colonial capital of Zomba sits beneath a forested plateau. Drive or hike up for waterfalls, trout streams and viewpoints over the plains, and visit Zomba Market, one of the best in the country, especially when plateau strawberries are in season.
Food and drink
Blantyre has a solid range of hotel restaurants, pizza and grill places, Indian cooking and simple local spots serving nsima with chicken, beef or chambo. The Protea Hotel Ryalls and the city's sports club are long time social hubs. Malawi's main brewery is here, and you will see its Carlsberg brands everywhere.
Getting around and safety
The city is hilly and spread along main roads, so use taxis booked through your hotel, and agree fares in advance. Minibuses link Blantyre and Limbe and run to Zomba, Mulanje and Liwonde. Avoid walking after dark, keep car doors locked in traffic and watch for pickpockets around the bus stations.
Where to stay
The city centre near Victoria Avenue has the established hotels, while Sunnyside and the hills around Kabula hold quieter guesthouses with views. Many visitors spend only one night in Blantyre and more time at Zomba, Thyolo or Mulanje.
Questions about Blantyre
Is Blantyre or Lilongwe better for visitors?
Blantyre has more history and is closer to Zomba, Mulanje, Majete and the tea estates. Lilongwe is closer to the central lakeshore and has the main airport. Many trips fly into one and out of the other.
How far is Blantyre from Mount Mulanje?
Mulanje is roughly an hour and a half to two hours by road from Blantyre, depending on traffic and road conditions.
Can I visit a tea estate near Blantyre?
Yes. Satemwa in Thyolo offers tastings and walks, and Lujeri near Mulanje is another historic estate. Book ahead, especially for tastings.
Is Blantyre safe?
Most visits are trouble free in daylight. Petty theft and muggings occur, especially after dark and around bus stations, so take taxis at night.
