Luxembourg destinations: where to go

Luxembourg is small enough to cross in about an hour and a half, yet it holds five very different landscapes: a fortress capital, sandstone gorges, wooded castle valleys, a vineyard river and an old steel country being reinvented. Free public transport ties them all together.

The five regions at a glance

Most visitors base themselves in Luxembourg City and take day trips, because nowhere in the country is far. The capital has the most hotels, the best food scene and the main train and bus hub, and the airport is a short tram ride away.

To the east, the Mullerthal, often called Little Switzerland, is hiking country: moss-covered rock gorges, small waterfalls and the abbey town of Echternach on the German border.

In the north, Vianden and the Éislek is the Luxembourg Ardennes: deep valleys, castles on hilltops, the Upper Sûre Lake and the photography museum at Clervaux.

In the south east, the Moselle valley is a gentle river lined with vineyards, crémant cellars and villages like Remich, Grevenmacher and Schengen.

In the south west, the Minett is the old iron and steel heartland around Esch-sur-Alzette, now a UNESCO biosphere reserve with blast furnaces, mining trains and a lively cultural scene.

How to combine them

With three days, spend two in the capital and one in either the Mullerthal or Vianden. With five days, add the Moselle and the other northern region. Hikers often stay a night or two in Echternach or Vianden to start trails early. Plan the details with the free trip planner, and see our places to visit for restaurants, cellars and stays in each region.
