Equatorial Guinea destinations: where to go

Equatorial Guinea is split between the volcanic island of Bioko and the mainland region of Río Muni, with a scattering of small islands in the Gulf of Guinea. Start here to see how the cities, beaches and forests fit together.

Bioko island

Most trips begin in Malabo, the capital on Bioko's north coast. It has a twin-towered Gothic cathedral, Spanish colonial streets, a breezy seafront and two lively cultural centres. Around an hour or more south by road, southern Bioko is green, wet and wild: the fishing town of Luba, the crater lakes and highland villages of Moca, and the black sand beaches around Ureca where sea turtles nest in the dry season.

The mainland

Bata is the country's largest city and the gateway to Río Muni. It has a long seafront promenade, busy markets and beaches within easy reach. Inland, Monte Alén National Park protects one of Central Africa's great rainforests, with rivers, waterfalls, forest elephants and primates.

How to combine them

A week works well: three or four nights in Malabo with a day trip or overnight in the south of Bioko, then a flight to Bata for a few nights with a guided day or two in Monte Alén. A ferry also links the island and the mainland, though flying is quicker and more reliable. If you have relatives in Mongomo, Ebebiyín or the inland towns, Bata is the natural base.

Before you choose

Tourism here is still small. Expect few tour operators, limited signposting and the need to arrange forest and beach trips in advance. When you are ready, use our free trip planner to fit the places you love into a realistic route.
