Al Khobar and the Eastern Province: the Gulf coast

The Eastern Province is where Saudi Arabia's oil story began, and its three linked cities, Dammam, Al Khobar and Dhahran, have an easygoing, international feel. Visitors come for the seafront, the striking Ithra cultural centre and the date palm oasis of Al Ahsa, one of the largest in the world.

Why visit the Eastern Province

Oil was struck in Dhahran in 1938, and the region grew around the company now known as Saudi Aramco. Decades of foreign workers have given the cities a relaxed, cosmopolitan air. It is an easy add on from Bahrain across the causeway, or a quieter alternative to Riyadh and Jeddah.

Al Khobar

Al Khobar is the most pleasant base. Its corniche runs along the Gulf, with walking paths, parks and the Al Khobar Water Tower, a landmark with a viewing deck. King Saud Street and Prince Turki Street are lined with cafés and restaurants. Half Moon Bay, a sheltered lagoon south of the city, is where families head for the beach and resorts at weekends.

Ithra in Dhahran

The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture, known as Ithra, is a stack of smooth stone pebbles wrapped in steel tubes, built near the site of the first commercial oil well. Inside are a museum, a library, a cinema, galleries and a children's museum, with a busy programme of exhibitions and talks. Allow at least half a day.

Dammam

Dammam is the provincial capital and a working port. The Dammam Corniche and the Heritage Village museum restaurant are worth an evening, and Coral Island and Marjan Island parks are popular with families.

Al Ahsa

About an hour and a half by road or train inland, Al Ahsa is a vast oasis of more than two million date palms, listed by UNESCO as a cultural landscape. See the Qaisariah Souq in Hofuf, the Ibrahim Palace and the Jawatha Mosque, and climb into the cool, wind carved caves of Jabal Al Qarah. Date season in late summer brings markets full of fresh fruit.

Food

The coast is good for grilled fish and Gulf style rice dishes. Al Ahsa is known for its dates and for hasawi rice, a red grain grown in the oasis. Al Khobar has a wide mix of international restaurants.

Where to stay

Stay on or near the Al Khobar Corniche for the best mix of hotels, food and walking. Half Moon Bay has beach resorts.

Safety and getting around

The cities are calm and easy to visit. Some governments advise caution in parts of Qatif governorate north of Dammam, so read current advice. Ride hailing apps work well, and Saudi Arabia Railways runs trains from Dammam to Al Ahsa and Riyadh. The King Fahd Causeway to Bahrain is open around the clock, though queues can be long at weekends.

Practical tips

Summers on the Gulf are very hot and humid, so winter is far more comfortable. Weekends see heavy traffic on the causeway to Bahrain and full beaches at Half Moon Bay. Ithra sometimes requires timed tickets for exhibitions, so book online. Dress modestly in public, and remember that swimwear is only for private beaches and resort pools.

A suggested two days

On day one, spend the morning at Ithra, then the late afternoon and evening on the Al Khobar Corniche, with dinner on Prince Turki Street. On day two, take the train or a tour to Al Ahsa for the Qaisariah Souq, Ibrahim Palace, the caves of Jabal Al Qarah and the palm groves. If you have a third day, spend it at Half Moon Bay or cross to Bahrain for the day.
