Saint Vincent and the Grenadines destinations: where to go

The country is really two worlds. Mainland St. Vincent is tall, green and volcanic, with the capital on its southwest corner, a calm leeward coast and a wild Atlantic windward side. South of it the Grenadines run like stepping stones, from Bequia to Union Island and the Tobago Cays. Start here to see how they fit together.

The capital and the south coast

Kingstown is the capital, ferry port and commercial heart, with its market, cathedrals, Fort Charlotte and the Botanical Gardens. Most mainland hotels sit just south of town around Villa Beach and Indian Bay, a short drive from Argyle International Airport.

The leeward coast

The leeward coast runs north from Kingstown along the sheltered Caribbean side. Expect black sand bays, fishing villages, the Vermont parrot trail, Wallilabou's film set and the Dark View and Baleine waterfalls.

The windward coast and La Soufriere

The windward coast and La Soufriere cover the Atlantic side and the volcano. This is where you hike to the crater rim, swim in the Owia Salt Pond and learn the story of the Garifuna at Sandy Bay.

Bequia

Bequia is the largest of the Grenadines and the easiest to reach, an hour by ferry from Kingstown. Admiralty Bay, gentle beaches, model boat builders and a friendly village feel make it a favourite.

The southern Grenadines

The southern Grenadines take in Canouan, Mayreau, Union Island, the private islands and the Tobago Cays Marine Park, the jewel of the whole country for snorkelling and sailing.

Putting it together

A good first trip spends a few nights on St. Vincent, then moves to Bequia and finally south to Union Island or Mayreau for the Tobago Cays. Our places to visit list helps you pick spots in each area, and the free trip planner helps you line up ferries and flights.
