Saint Lucia destinations: where to go

Saint Lucia is only about forty kilometres from top to bottom, but its mountainous spine and winding roads make each corner feel distinct: the capital and its harbour, the resort strip of the north, sheltered Marigot Bay, the volcanic south west around the Pitons, and the breezy plains of Vieux Fort. Start here to see how they fit together.

The capital

Castries is the capital and main port, built around a deep natural harbour. It has the Saturday market, Derek Walcott Square, the painted cathedral, the duty free quays and the viewpoint at Morne Fortune. Most visitors pass through in half a day, but it is the best place to see everyday Saint Lucian life.

The north

Rodney Bay and the fishing town of Gros Islet form the island's busiest holiday area. Reduit Beach, the marina, Pigeon Island National Landmark and the Friday night street party are all here, along with the widest choice of restaurants and stays. It is close to George F. L. Charles Airport.

The west coast

Marigot Bay is a small, steep sided bay lined with palms and yachts, about twenty minutes south of Castries. It is calm, romantic and a good halfway point between north and south, with Anse La Raye and its Friday fish fry just down the coast.

The south west

Soufrière is the old French capital and the gateway to the Pitons, Sulphur Springs, Diamond Falls, cocoa estates and some of the best snorkelling and diving on the island. If you only make one trip out of your base, make it here.

The south

Vieux Fort is home to Hewanorra International Airport, the kitesurfing beach at Anse de Sables, the Maria Islands nature reserve and the Moule à Chique lighthouse. It is quieter, more local and ideal for a first or last night near the airport.

Putting it together

Most first visits split a week between the north and Soufrière, with a day in Castries and Marigot Bay on the way. Our places to visit list helps you pick spots in each area, and the free trip planner helps you balance driving time with time on the beach.
