The capital
Basseterre is the capital and the main port, with the Circus, Independence Square, the National Museum, Port Zante and the ferry terminal for Nevis. It is compact, walkable and best explored in the morning.
The beaches near town
Frigate Bay sits on the narrow neck just east of Basseterre, with a calm Caribbean beach on one side, a breezy Atlantic beach on the other, the golf course and the lively Strip of beach bars. It is the most popular base for first-time visitors.
The South East Peninsula
The South East Peninsula begins at Timothy Hill, the famous viewpoint over two seas, and runs past salt ponds and calm bays to Cockleshell Bay, Christophe Harbour and the Sea Bridge ferry, all facing Nevis Peak.
The north
North St Kitts is the green, mountainous part of the island: Brimstone Hill Fortress, Romney Manor, the Wingfield rainforest, Mount Liamuiga, the black sand of Dieppe Bay and the wild Black Rocks on the Atlantic coast. Most people visit on day trips from the south.
Nevis
Nevis is the smaller, quieter sister island, a short ferry ride away. Charlestown, Pinney's Beach, plantation inns, hot springs and Nevis Peak make it worth a day at least, and ideally a few nights.
How to combine them
For a week, stay four or five nights at Frigate Bay or the peninsula, take day trips to Basseterre and the north, then spend two or three nights on Nevis. If you prefer peace over nightlife, flip the balance towards Nevis. Use the places to visit list to fill your days and the free trip planner to shape the route.
