Why go
Nevis feels like the Caribbean of a slower age. Goats wander the roads, villages have just a shop and a church, and the evenings are quiet. It was once one of the richest islands in the region thanks to sugar, and the stone ruins of that era are everywhere. Today it is loved by travellers seeking peace, good food, nature and history in one small place.
Charlestown
The capital is a few streets of stone and wooden buildings around the ferry pier. The **Museum of Nevis History** stands on the site of the house where **Alexander Hamilton**, one of the founders of the United States, was born. Nearby is the old **Jewish Cemetery**, among the oldest in the Caribbean. The **public market** by the water is busiest on Saturday mornings. Walk the town slowly in the morning, then head to the beach.
Beaches
**Pinney's Beach** runs for miles north of Charlestown, palm lined and facing St Kitts. It has a string of beach bars, including **Sunshine's Beach Bar and Grill**, home of the potent Killer Bee rum punch, and the Four Seasons resort. **Oualie Beach** in the north is calm and family friendly, with water sports. On the east coast, Atlantic beaches such as **Lovers Beach** and **Indian Castle** are wild and beautiful but often rough, so swim only in calm conditions.
Nature and hiking
**Nevis Peak** is a demanding climb through cloud forest to the summit, best with a guide and in dry weather. Gentler walks include the **Source Trail**, which follows old water pipes into the rainforest, and trails around the **Golden Rock** estate, where vervet monkeys are common. The **Botanical Garden of Nevis** is an easy half day for all ages.
History
The **Bath Hotel**, a grand Georgian spa built in the 1770s, stands just south of Charlestown next to the hot spring where locals still soak. **St. John's Figtree Church** holds the record of Horatio Nelson's marriage to Fanny Nisbet in 1787. Estate ruins such as **New River** and **Eden Brown** tell the story of sugar and slavery, and **Saddle Hill** gives views over the island.
Festivals
Nevis comes alive in summer. The **Nevis Mango Festival**, usually in early July, celebrates the island's many mango varieties. **Culturama**, around Emancipation Day at the start of August, brings calypso, pageants and street parties to Charlestown. The **Cross Channel Swim** from St Kitts to Oualie Beach also draws crowds.
Where to stay
Nevis is known for its **plantation inns**, small hotels built in historic estates, including **Montpelier Plantation and Beach**, **Golden Rock Inn**, **The Hermitage** and **Nisbet Plantation Beach Club**. The **Four Seasons Resort Nevis** on Pinney's Beach is the main full service resort. **Oualie Beach Resort** is relaxed and handy for the airport. Guesthouses and villas suit longer and budget stays.
Getting there and around
Passenger ferries run between Basseterre and Charlestown several times a day, and the Sea Bridge car ferry links Majors Bay on St Kitts with Cades Bay. Water taxis also cross The Narrows. Vance W. Amory International Airport takes regional flights. On the island, taxis are the easiest option, with fixed rates for common routes, and minibuses run on the main road in the day.
Combine it with
Most visitors pair Nevis with a few nights in Frigate Bay or the South East Peninsula.
