Qatar destinations: where to go

Qatar is a compact peninsula you can cross in under two hours, yet it holds a capital of world class museums, a brand new city, an old fishing town, towering dunes beside the sea and a lonely north of forts and mangroves. Start here to see how its parts fit together.

The capital

Almost every trip begins in Doha. Wander Souq Waqif, walk the Corniche, spend a morning at the Museum of Islamic Art and an afternoon at the National Museum of Qatar, then eat in Msheireb or on The Pearl. Give it two to three days.

The new city

North of Doha, Lusail is a city built from scratch: the World Cup final stadium, the crescent Katara Towers, a lively boulevard and the race circuit. The metro gets you there in about half an hour from the centre.

The fishing town

South of the airport, Al Wakrah has a seaside souq, a family beach and Zaha Hadid's sail shaped stadium. It is an easy half day and a calmer place to stay.

The desert and the Inland Sea

In the far south, the Inland Sea is where tall dunes roll down to a sea inlet at Khor Al Adaid. You reach it with a licensed tour in a four wheel drive, ideally late afternoon for sunset or overnight in a desert camp.

The quiet north

Al Khor and the north hold the UNESCO listed Al Zubarah, the mangroves of Al Thakhira and Purple Island, rock carvings at Jebel Al Jassasiya and the abandoned village of Al Jumail. It makes a full, rewarding day.

Putting it together

A stopover of one or two days fits Doha alone. With four or five days, add the desert and the north, plus an evening in Lusail. Use the free trip planner to shape a route around your dates.
