The classic Liberia trip

From Monrovia's history to Robertsport's waves

Most first trips start with a few days in Monrovia: Providence Island, the National Museum, the view from the old Ducor Hotel and an evening on the beach at Mamba Point or Sinkor. Then head northwest to Robertsport, where long left hand point breaks peel past fishing canoes and Lake Piso glows at sunset. With more time, go east to the rainforest of Sapo National Park or the faded grandeur of Harper on Cape Palmas.

  • Uncrowded surf a few hours from the capital
  • Some of West Africa's last great rainforest
  • History you can touch, from Providence Island to Harper
  • Liberian food: palm butter, cassava leaf and pepper soup

A note from our founder

A note from our founder

My first time visiting Kenya, I was genuinely surprised with how fast it began feeling like home. The people are so friendly, the food is delicious and familiar, and the accommodations are modern and upscale.

During my travels throughout the continent, I commonly hear tourists share stories about being scammed or taken advantage of, which is both frustrating and disheartening.

Living in Kenya for the last 2 years, I have had the great fortune to meet a network of wonderful Kenyans who have continuously help guide my family's journey. Their shared knowledge has not only greatly enhanced our overall experience here, but it has also saved us tons of time, energy, and resources.

With BlissPoint Travel, my hope is to build a global community that is willing to share useful, uncommon knowledge so that we can all blissfully enjoy the wonders our world has to offer.

Questions we hear most

Is Liberia safe for visitors?

Most visits pass without trouble, but Liberia needs more care than many destinations. Petty crime and some violent crime happen in Monrovia, especially after dark, roads are risky at night and sea currents are dangerous. Read your own government's current travel advice before you book and again before you go.

Do I need a visa for Liberia?

Citizens of ECOWAS countries can usually enter without a visa, while most other visitors need one arranged in advance or through the official online system. Rules differ by passport and change, so check the Liberia Immigration Service and your nearest Liberian embassy before booking.

Do I need a yellow fever certificate?

Yes, travellers are expected to show proof of yellow fever vaccination on arrival. Get vaccinated at least ten days before you travel and carry the certificate with your passport.

What language is spoken in Liberia?

English is the official language, and most people speak Liberian English, a warm, fast local form that takes a day or two to tune into. Kpelle, Bassa, Grebo, Vai and many other languages are spoken at home.

What currency is used in Liberia?

Liberia uses two currencies side by side: the Liberian dollar and the US dollar. Bring clean, recent US dollar notes, keep Liberian dollars for small purchases and do not count on cards outside a few hotels and supermarkets in Monrovia.

When is the best time to visit Liberia?

The dry season, roughly November to April, is the easiest time, with passable roads and beach weather. Liberia is one of the wettest countries in the world from May to October, when many inland roads turn to mud, though surfers like the bigger swells of the rainy months.
