Jamaica destinations: where to go

Jamaica is bigger than many visitors expect, about two hundred and thirty kilometres long, and each coast has its own character: the capital and mountains in the southeast, resort towns on the north and west coasts and a quiet, green east. Start here to see how they fit together.

The capital and the mountains

Kingston is the capital and the cultural engine of the island, home to the Bob Marley Museum, Devon House, the National Gallery, Trench Town and Port Royal, with the Blue Mountains rising right behind it.

The north and west coasts

Montego Bay is where most visitors land, with the Hip Strip, great houses and resorts along the coast. Negril, at the western tip, has Seven Mile Beach and cliffs made for sunsets. Ocho Rios, on the north coast, is the base for Dunn's River Falls, the Blue Hole and Nine Mile.

The green east

Port Antonio is the quiet, rainy, beautiful corner of Portland parish, with the Blue Lagoon, Frenchman's Cove, Rio Grande rafting and jerk in Boston Bay.

The south coast

Treasure Beach, Black River and the Pelican Bar make a slower south coast detour, best added between Negril and Kingston. See our places to visit list for ideas there.

Putting it together

Roads are good on the north coast highway and the toll highways to Kingston, but slow in the hills. Most first trips pick one or two bases. Use the free trip planner to match places to your days.
