Why visit Kingston
Most visitors never leave the north coast, and they miss the real heart of the island. Kingston sits on one of the largest natural harbours in the world, with the Blue Mountains behind it. It is a city of studios, sound systems, galleries and universities, and Jamaicans from across the island come here to work, study and party.
Neighbourhoods to know
**New Kingston** is the modern business and hotel district, with the Courtleigh, the AC Hotel and others close to Emancipation Park. It is the easiest base for first timers. **Hope Road** runs uphill past Devon House and the Bob Marley Museum to Hope Gardens and the University of the West Indies. **Downtown** has the National Gallery, Coronation Market, Liberty Hall and the waterfront, best explored by day with a guide or a clear plan. **Barbican, Liguanea and Half Way Tree** are local shopping and eating areas.
The big sights
The **Bob Marley Museum** at 56 Hope Road is the house where Marley lived and recorded, and the guided tour is moving even for casual fans. **Devon House**, built by George Stiebel, Jamaica's first Black millionaire, has fine rooms, shady lawns and the famous ice cream. The **National Gallery of Jamaica** on the downtown waterfront tells the story of Jamaican art from Taino times to today. **Trench Town Culture Yard** is the yard where Marley lived as a young man; go with the community guides who run it.
Port Royal and Lime Cay
At the end of the Palisadoes road beyond the airport lies **Port Royal**, once called the wickedest city on earth, before an earthquake in 1692 swallowed much of it into the sea. Visit Fort Charles, then eat fried fish and bammy at Gloria's. On weekends small boats run out to **Lime Cay**, a sand island where Kingstonians relax.
The Blue Mountains
Behind the city the road climbs to Irish Town, Newcastle and **Holywell** in the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Tour a coffee estate such as Craighton, walk forest trails, or hike to Blue Mountain Peak before dawn to see sunrise over both coasts on a clear day.
Food and nightlife
Kingston eats well. Try jerk from roadside drums, curry goat, oxtail, and patties from local bakeries. Sunday night at **Kingston Dub Club** on Skyline Drive is a sound system session with the city lights below. Weekend street dances and live music happen across town; ask your hotel which are welcoming to visitors.
Staying safe in Kingston
Kingston has areas with high levels of gang violence, and government travel advice names parts of the city to avoid. Stay in New Kingston or the hills, use licensed taxis or known app rides, do not walk around at night, and visit downtown and Trench Town with a guide. Keep phones and cash out of sight. Most visitors who follow this have a great time.
Getting there
Norman Manley International Airport sits on the Palisadoes, about thirty minutes from New Kingston. From Montego Bay, Knutsford Express coaches link the two cities in about four hours, and the toll highway makes the drive from Ocho Rios much quicker than it used to be.
