A safety note first
Bahir Dar is the capital of the Amhara region, where armed conflict since 2023 has led several governments to advise against all or all but essential travel. There have been curfews and disruption at times. Check your government's current advice before booking and before you fly.
The monasteries of Lake Tana
Lake Tana holds dozens of islands, and many have churches and monasteries founded from the fourteenth century onwards. The most visited are on the Zege Peninsula, a short boat ride away, where Ura Kidane Mehret is famous for its round church covered in bright paintings of saints and Bible stories. Azwa Maryam is nearby. Further out, Narga Selassie on Dek Island and the island of Kebran Gabriel are beautiful, though some monasteries admit men only. A half-day boat trip usually covers two or three churches.
The Blue Nile Falls
About an hour's drive south-east, the Blue Nile Falls, known locally as Tis Issat, meaning smoke of fire, plunge over a wide basalt cliff. Their flow is now partly controlled by a hydroelectric scheme and is far stronger in and after the rainy season, from about August to November. A walk from the village of Tis Abay crosses a seventeenth-century Portuguese stone bridge and a suspension bridge to the viewpoints.
Hippos and birds
Boat trips to the point where the Blue Nile leaves the lake often spot hippos, especially early in the morning. Lake Tana is also excellent for birds, with pelicans, kingfishers and fish eagles along the shore.
The city itself
Bahir Dar is easy to enjoy on foot or by bicycle. Stroll the lakeside promenade, visit the market for baskets and cotton cloth and watch the papyrus tankwa boats that fishermen still use. Bezawit Hill, with its former palace of Haile Selassie, has views over the river at sunset.
Food and drink
Lakeside hotels and cafés serve fresh fish from the lake, alongside injera, tibs and fasting dishes. Juice bars and pastry shops line the main streets, and there are a few bars with live traditional music in the evenings.
Where to stay and getting around
Bahir Dar has some of the best mid-range lakeside hotels in the north, plus simpler guesthouses in town. Bajaj three-wheelers are cheap and easy, and bicycles can often be borrowed or hired. Boats to the monasteries leave from the hotel jetties and the port. Most visitors fly in from Addis Ababa, often as the first stop on the historic route.
How it fits into a trip
Bahir Dar works well as the first stop north of the capital, followed by Gondar and the Simien Mountains, then Lalibela. Allow one full day for the lake and half a day for the falls.
Respecting the monasteries
Dress modestly, remove shoes before entering churches and ask before taking photographs of priests or manuscripts. Some churches charge separate entry fees, so carry small notes.
Best time to visit
The dry months from October to March bring calm water for boat trips and clear skies. The Blue Nile Falls are fuller just after the rains, from about August to November, so October and November offer a good balance. Timkat in January is celebrated with processions along the lakeshore.
