Why go
Krabi is for people who want scenery first. The cliffs of Railay draw climbers from around the world, the four islands boat trip is one of Thailand's most beautiful days out, and the inland forests hide hot springs, emerald pools and temples on hilltops. It has fewer big nightlife strips than Phuket and a more relaxed pace.
Ao Nang
Ao Nang is the main beach town, with a long promenade of hotels, restaurants and tour desks. The beach itself is pleasant rather than perfect, but it is the hub for long-tail boats to Railay and the islands, and has the widest choice of places to stay and eat.
Railay
Railay is a peninsula cut off by cliffs and reached only by boat, which keeps it free of cars. Phra Nang beach, with its cave shrine, is one of Thailand's loveliest. Railay West has the sunsets, Railay East the mangroves and cheaper stays. Climbing schools run beginner courses, and a short but steep trail leads to a viewpoint and a hidden lagoon; it is a scramble with ropes, so wear proper shoes and skip it if wet.
Island hopping
The four islands tour visits Ko Poda, Chicken Island, Tup Island and Phra Nang. Hong Islands have a hidden lagoon for kayaking. Ko Phi Phi is closer to Krabi than many people think, with ferries from Klong Jilad pier. Maya Bay, famous from the film The Beach, now has visitor limits and seasonal closures to let the reef recover, and swimming there is not allowed; check the national parks site for the current rules.
Ko Lanta
Ko Lanta is a long, gentle island reached by road and car ferry, with long beaches, mangroves, Old Town on the east coast with its stilted houses, and a strong community of Muslim and sea gypsy (Chao Lay) families. It suits families and anyone wanting a slow week.
Inland
The Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea) near Krabi Town has more than a thousand steps to a summit Buddha and huge views; go early. The Emerald Pool and the hot springs waterfall near Khlong Thom are a good half-day trip, and Khao Phanom Bencha National Park has jungle walks.
Krabi Town
Krabi Town sits on a mangrove river, with a riverside walk, a lively weekend night market and good local food. It is a cheap, authentic base and handy for the airport.
Food
Try southern curries such as gaeng som (sour fish curry), khao mok gai (Thai Muslim style chicken biryani), roti with condensed milk and fresh grilled seafood. Remember that many communities in Krabi are Muslim, so dress modestly away from the beach.
When to go and safety
November to April has calm seas. From May to October, rough water cancels some boat trips and makes swimming risky. Use licensed boats with life jackets, avoid overloaded long-tails in bad weather, and keep your valuables in a dry bag.
How long to stay
Four days covers Ao Nang, Railay and an island tour. A week lets you add Ko Lanta or a night on Phi Phi at an easy pace, with rest days on the beach between boat trips.
Questions about Krabi
Should I stay in Ao Nang or Railay?
Ao Nang has more choice and is easier for day trips. Railay is more scenic and peaceful, but you need a boat to get anywhere and luggage can be awkward at low tide.
Can you visit Maya Bay?
Yes, at certain times, with visitor limits and no swimming. It closes for a recovery period each year, so check the Thai national parks website before booking.
Is Krabi better than Phuket?
Krabi is quieter and more scenic, while Phuket has more beaches, nightlife and facilities. Many people combine both by ferry.
How do I get to Ko Lanta from Krabi?
Minivans with car ferry crossings run from Krabi Town, Ao Nang and the airport, and fast boats run in the dry season.
