Why go
The Gulf islands suit almost everyone. Samui has smart resorts, spas and family beaches; Phangan has hippie roots, jungle waterfalls and secret bays; Tao has clear water, reefs and dive schools at every turn. Because the main rain falls from October to December, these islands are a good choice when the Andaman coast is in its wet season.
Ko Samui's beaches
Chaweng is the busiest beach, with soft white sand, restaurants and nightlife. Lamai, just south, is a little calmer, with the Hin Ta and Hin Yai rocks at its southern end. Bophut's Fisherman's Village has a charming old wooden shophouse street and a Friday walking street market. Choeng Mon is quiet and good for families. Maenam and the south and west coasts are peaceful, with sunset views and lower prices.
Sights on Samui
Wat Phra Yai, the Big Buddha, sits on a little island joined by a causeway. Wat Plai Laem nearby has a many-armed statue of Guanyin over a lake. Na Muang waterfalls are a cool escape inland. The Secret Buddha Garden, high in the hills, is a quirky sculpture garden reached by steep road.
Ang Thong Marine Park
Ang Thong is a national park of more than forty islands west of Samui, with kayaking, snorkelling and a steep climb to a viewpoint over an emerald saltwater lake. It is the best day trip from Samui and closes in the stormiest weeks; book a licensed tour.
Ko Phangan
The monthly Full Moon Party at Haad Rin draws huge crowds. If you go, keep drinks in sight, avoid buckets of unknown spirits, never use drugs (penalties are severe) and stay away from the sea at night. The rest of Phangan is quiet, with yoga retreats around Sri Thanu, the beaches of Bottle Beach and Thong Nai Pan, and waterfalls in the jungle.
Ko Tao
Ko Tao is small, rocky and famous for diving, with many schools offering beginner courses in calm, warm water. Snorkel at Shark Bay and Aow Leuk, and hike to the John-Suwan viewpoint. Ko Nang Yuan, three islets joined by a sandbar, is a short boat ride away and charges a small entry fee.
Food
Samui's restaurants range from beach shacks to fine dining. Look for southern curries, fresh seafood at Hua Thanon fishing village and coconut everything. The walking street markets in Fisherman's Village, Lamai and Maenam are great for snacks.
Getting there
Samui Airport is small and privately run, with flights from Bangkok, Phuket and a few regional hubs. A more budget friendly option is to fly to Surat Thani or take the train or bus from Bangkok and connect by ferry. Ferries link Samui, Phangan and Tao several times a day; seas can be rough, so take seasickness tablets if needed.
Getting around
Samui has ride apps and taxis, often at fixed prices; songthaews run along the ring road by day. Scooter rental is common but roads are steep and accidents frequent, so think carefully and check your insurance.
Questions about Ko Samui
When is the best time to visit Ko Samui?
January to August is usually the best period, with the heaviest rain from October to December. This makes the Gulf a good alternative when the Andaman coast is wet.
How do I get from Ko Samui to Ko Tao?
Ferries and speedboats run several times a day, usually stopping at Ko Phangan on the way. Book ahead in high season.
Is the Full Moon Party safe?
Most people have a good time, but there are real risks: drink spiking, theft, drug arrests, injuries and drowning. Go with friends, keep drinks with you and stay out of the sea.
Which Samui beach is best for families?
Choeng Mon, Bophut and parts of Maenam are calmer and quieter than Chaweng, and good for families with young children.
