Why go
Bohinj feels like Slovenia before mass tourism. Development is limited by the national park, the villages of **Ribčev Laz**, **Stara Fužina**, **Ukanc** and **Srednja vas** keep their farming character, and the lake is cold, clean and calm. It is the best base in the country for walkers who want big scenery without a long drive.
Top things to do
Start at **Ribčev Laz**, where the stone bridge, the frescoed **Church of St John the Baptist** and the statue of the four men who first climbed Triglav sit at the eastern end of the lake. Walk the **lakeside trail** or cycle round on the quieter southern road.
At the western end, climb the steps to **Savica waterfall**, which falls in a double cascade from the mountain wall. From **Ukanc**, the **Vogel cable car** rises over a thousand metres to views across the lake to Triglav, Slovenia's highest peak. In winter it serves a ski area.
Near Stara Fužina, **Mostnica Gorge** is a lovely walk along a narrow, carved river canyon to the Mostnica waterfall, less crowded than Vintgar. Visit the **Alpine Dairy Museum** in Stara Fužina to learn how cheese was made on the high pastures, and taste **Mohant**, a strong local cheese.
In summer, swim, paddleboard or kayak from the shore; the water is colder than Bled. Serious hikers head to the **Seven Lakes Valley** or attempt **Triglav** itself with a guide and hut nights. Take mountain weather seriously and check conditions before you set out.
Events
In September, the **Cows' Ball (Kravji bal)** celebrates the cattle coming down from the high pastures with music and folk costume. Bohinj also hosts a **wild flower festival** in late spring.
Day trips
Bled is half an hour by bus. The **Pokljuka** plateau, the **Vrata valley** below Triglav's north face via Mojstrana, and the scenic **Bohinj railway** through the mountains towards Nova Gorica are all close.
Where to stay
Choose **Ribčev Laz** for buses and restaurants, **Stara Fužina** for farm stays and trails, or **Ukanc** for quiet and the cable car. **Bohinjska Bistrica**, a little further from the lake, has the train station and more choice. Book summer early.
Getting there and around
Buses run from Ljubljana via Bled to the lake. The Bohinj railway stops at **Bohinjska Bistrica**, where a car train also crosses under the mountains to the Soča side. In summer, free or cheap local shuttle buses link the villages, the waterfall and the cable car, and parking near the lake is paid and limited.
Practical tips
Bohinj sits inside a national park, so respect the rules: no wild camping, dogs on leads in certain areas, and no drones without permission. Mountain weather changes fast, so carry a waterproof layer, water and a charged phone on any hike, and check the forecast from the national weather service before setting out. The lake is cold even in August, which is refreshing but tiring for long swims. Buses are less frequent than at Bled, so check return times. Shops and restaurants are fewer and close earlier than in Bled, and some guesthouses close between seasons, so book ahead in spring and autumn as well as summer. A local guest card often brings free local transport and discounts.
Questions about Lake Bohinj
Is Bohinj better than Bled?
They are different. Bled is the iconic view and easier for a short visit. Bohinj is bigger, quieter and better for hiking and swimming. If you have time, see both.
Can I climb Triglav?
Fit, experienced hikers can, usually over two days with a night in a mountain hut, and the summit ridge has fixed cables. First timers should go with a licensed mountain guide.
How do I get from Bled to Bohinj?
Regular buses take about half an hour. In summer the road along the lake is busy, so buses are often easier than driving and parking.
When does the Vogel cable car run?
It runs most of the year, with breaks for maintenance between seasons. Check the Vogel website for current times before you go.
