San Marino destinations: where to go

San Marino is tiny, about the size of a small city, but it packs a clifftop capital, three famous towers, a market town and quiet rural villages into its hills. Start here to see how they fit together on one trip.

On top of the mountain

The City of San Marino is the walled old town on Monte Titano, with the Palazzo Pubblico, the Basilica and most museums. Right above it, Monte Titano and the Three Towers are the symbol of the republic, linked by the cliffside Witches' Pass. Together they make the essential first visit, and the best place to spend a night.

Below the cliffs

Borgo Maggiore is the historic market town just below, connected to the old town by cable car. It has a Thursday market, a stamp and coin museum and easier parking.

The gateway and the countryside

Serravalle and Dogana are the first places you reach from Rimini, with practical hotels, shops, an old castle and the national stadium. Further out, the castelli such as Montegiardino, Faetano and Fiorentino offer quiet hills, farm restaurants and walking trails.

How to combine them

Most travellers spend one day on the mountain and add a night in the old town. With two days, add Borgo Maggiore in the morning and the castelli in the afternoon, or pair San Marino with San Leo and Rimini.
