Why go
Siargao has a rare balance. It is developed enough to be comfortable, with good cafés, surf schools and guesthouses around General Luna, but most of the island remains palm forest, mangroves and fishing villages. Surfers know it for Cloud 9, a powerful reef break with a long boardwalk out to the peak, but there are gentle waves for beginners too, and non surfers find plenty to do.
Surfing
Cloud 9 is for experienced surfers. Beginners learn at Jacking Horse, right next to it, or at breaks reached by short boat rides such as Daku and Guiwan, with local instructors. The biggest swells arrive from roughly September to November, when the international surf competition is usually held. Book a lesson through a registered school and wear a rash guard and reef shoes.
Island hopping and lagoons
The three island tour from General Luna stops at Naked Island, a bare sandbar, Daku Island for a seafood lunch, and Guyam, a tiny palm covered islet. Sugba Lagoon, near Del Carmen, is a clear blue lagoon among mangroves, with paddleboards and a diving platform. Further afield, a day trip to Sohoton Cove in Bucas Grande reveals hidden lagoons and a stingless jellyfish lake in season.
Around the island
Rent a scooter, if you are an experienced rider, and loop the island. Stop at the Coconut Tree View Deck, the Maasin River rope swing with its leaning palm, and the Magpupungko Rock Pools in Pilar, which appear only at low tide: check the tide tables before you go. Pacifico, in the north, is a quiet beach with its own waves.
Eating and nightlife
General Luna has a wide food scene for a small island: wood fired pizza at Kermit, smoothie bowls at Shaka, fresh fish at the public market and Filipino grills along the roads. Nightlife rotates through the week, with different venues hosting the party each night.
Getting there
Sayak Airport in Del Carmen has direct flights from Manila and Cebu, and some from Clark. It is about forty five minutes by van to General Luna. You can also fly to Surigao City and take a ferry, which is slower. Flights can be cancelled by weather, so leave a buffer day.
Where to stay
General Luna, especially along Tourism Road near Cloud 9, is the hub. Catangnan and Malinao are a little quieter, and Pacifico suits people who want to escape completely.
Good to know
Cash machines in General Luna are limited and can run dry, so bring pesos. Power cuts happen, and the island is still recovering in places from Typhoon Odette in 2021. Wear a helmet on scooters, as road accidents are the main risk. Siargao sits off Mindanao, but it is not in the areas covered by government warnings about western Mindanao; still, check your government's advice for the latest.
Responsible travel
Siargao's popularity has grown quickly, and the island's communities and reefs feel the pressure. Carry a refillable bottle, avoid single use plastic, and respect protected areas such as Sugba Lagoon and Sohoton Cove. Support local surf schools, guides and family run restaurants, and drive slowly through villages, where children and animals often wander into the road.
