Durmitor National Park and Žabljak: a first-timer's guide

Durmitor National Park is Montenegro's mountain heart, a UNESCO World Heritage site of jagged limestone peaks, eighteen glacial lakes, pine forests and the Tara River Canyon, the deepest in Europe. The small town of Žabljak, one of the highest towns in the Balkans, is the base for hiking in summer and skiing in winter. It feels a world away from the coast.

Why visit Durmitor

If you only see Montenegro's coast, you miss half the country. Durmitor offers alpine walking without the crowds of the Alps, wide plateaus where shepherds still graze sheep in summer, and some of the clearest air and water in Europe. Nights are cool even in August, which is a relief after the heat of the coast.

Black Lake

Crno Jezero, the Black Lake, is a short walk from Žabljak and the most visited spot in the park. A flat path circles it through pine forest beneath the peak of Međed, about an hour's easy walk. In summer you can rent rowing boats or swim in the chilly water. A park entry ticket is needed; buy it at the entrance.

Hiking

The classic hike is Bobotov Kuk, the highest peak in the park, a long day's climb on marked trails with views across the whole range. Easier options include the walk to the Ice Cave on Obla Glava, which holds ice all year, and the climb to Ćurevac, a grassy summit above the Tara Canyon. The weather changes fast in the mountains: start early, carry water, layers and a map, and tell your guesthouse where you are going. Snow can linger on high trails until June.

The Tara Canyon

The Tara River cuts a canyon more than a kilometre deep. The arched Đurđevića Tara bridge, about half an hour from Žabljak, has a famous view and a zipline that flies across the canyon. Rafting trips run from late spring to early autumn, from spirited in May to gentle in August. Choose an established operator and confirm life jackets and helmets are provided.

The Durmitor Ring and Piva

The Durmitor Ring road loops through the park over the Sedlo Pass and across high, bare plateaus, one of the most spectacular drives in the Balkans. To the west, Piva Lake is an emerald reservoir in deep canyons, and Piva Monastery was moved stone by stone to save it from the rising water.

Winter

From roughly December to March, Savin Kuk and smaller slopes near Žabljak offer skiing on a simple, family friendly scale. Roads can be icy; check conditions before travelling.

Getting there

Buses run to Žabljak from Podgorica and the coast, though less often outside summer. The scenic route goes through the Morača Canyon past Morača Monastery and Kolašin, where Biogradska Gora National Park protects an ancient forest around a lake.

Food in the mountains

Mountain food is hearty: kačamak, lamb cooked in milk, fresh kajmak, cheese and homemade bread. Some katuns, summer shepherd camps, sell cheese and milk directly in season.

Wildlife

The park shelters brown bears, wolves, chamois and golden eagles, though sightings are rare. Keep food packed away and make noise on quiet forest trails.

Where to stay

Žabljak has small hotels, guesthouses, wooden chalets and eco villages, plus mountain huts for hikers. Book ahead for July and August.
