Langkawi: a first-timer's guide to Malaysia's island escape

Langkawi is an archipelago of around a hundred islands in the Andaman Sea near the Thai border, and its main island is Malaysia's favourite beach escape. It mixes sandy bays, mangrove rivers, limestone cliffs, waterfalls and rainforest with a relaxed pace and duty free status. It is the classic way to end a trip on the peninsula.

Why go

Langkawi is a UNESCO Global Geopark, recognised for its ancient rocks, karst landscapes and mangroves. Yet it is also simply a lovely place to rest: warm sea, long sunsets, easy food and a choice of beaches from busy to almost empty. Its compact size means you can see most of it in a few days without long journeys.

Beaches

Pantai Cenang on the southwest coast is the busiest beach, lined with restaurants, bars and shops, with water sports and wonderful sunsets. Pantai Tengah next door is a little quieter. Pantai Kok in the west sits beneath the mountains and feels calmer. In the north, Tanjung Rhu has fine sand and views of limestone islets, while Datai Bay is home to secluded resorts in the rainforest. Jellyfish can appear in some months, so ask locally before swimming and follow any flags.

Nature

Kilim Karst Geoforest Park is the highlight for many visitors: boat trips wind through mangrove channels beneath limestone cliffs, with stops at a bat cave and fish farms, and with eagles circling overhead. Choose an operator that does not feed the eagles, as the practice harms the birds. The Langkawi Cable Car climbs steeply up Gunung Mat Cincang to viewing platforms and the curved Sky Bridge, often above the clouds. Close by, the Seven Wells waterfall has rock pools to cool off in. Island hopping trips visit Pulau Dayang Bunting and its freshwater lake, Pulau Beras Basah and a spot to watch eagles.

Culture and food

Langkawi is mostly Malay and quietly traditional away from the beach strip. Mahsuri's Tomb tells the story of the princess whose curse, legend says, kept the island poor for seven generations. Laman Padi explains rice farming. In the evenings, a night market moves from town to town on different days, with grilled seafood, satay, Malay cakes and drinks. Restaurants along Cenang serve Malay, Thai and international food, and fresh seafood is excellent.

Duty free

Langkawi is a duty free zone, so chocolate, alcohol and some household goods cost less than on the mainland. Check your own country's customs limits before you shop for gifts. Kuah, the main town, has the biggest duty free stores and the ferry jetty.

Getting there and around

Flights connect Langkawi with Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Singapore and other cities. Ferries run from Kuala Perlis and Kuala Kedah on the mainland, and seasonally from Penang. There is no public bus network to speak of, so most visitors use ride apps or taxis. Scooters can be rented, but only ride if you are experienced and properly licensed, and always wear a helmet.

When to go

The best weather is from December to April, with calm seas and clear skies. From May to October the southwest monsoon brings more rain, rougher seas and fewer visitors. It is still possible to visit then, with lower demand and lush green hills.

Where to stay

Cenang and Tengah suit travellers who want restaurants and bars within walking distance. Datai Bay and Tanjung Rhu are for secluded luxury resorts. Kuah suits budget travellers and those catching early ferries.

Practical tips

Bring reef safe sunscreen, insect repellent and a light layer for the cable car summit. Book island trips through established operators with life jackets. Our places to visit list has beaches, food and stays, and the free trip planner helps fit Langkawi into your route.
