Barbados destinations: where to go

Barbados is small, about thirty four kilometres long, yet each coast feels different: the historic capital in the southwest, the lively south coast, the calm west coast and the wild Atlantic east. Start here to see how they fit together.

The capital

Bridgetown is the capital and only city, with the UNESCO listed centre and Garrison, Parliament, the synagogue, Cheapside Market and the calm water of Carlisle Bay.

The south coast

The south coast runs from Hastings through St. Lawrence Gap to Oistins. It is the liveliest and best value coast, with beaches, nightlife, kitesurfing and the Friday fish fry.

The west coast

Holetown is the heart of the calm Platinum Coast, with turtles, smart dining and sunsets. Further north, Speightstown is the island's second town and a quieter, more local base for exploring the north.

The east coast

Bathsheba is the gateway to the wild Atlantic coast, with giant boulders, the Soup Bowl surf break and gardens such as Andromeda and Hunte's.

Putting it together

Most first visits use one base on the south or west coast, add a day in Bridgetown, a Friday at Oistins and an island tour taking in Bathsheba, Harrison's Cave and a rum distillery. Our places to visit list helps you pick spots in each area, and the free trip planner helps you shape the days.
