The south coast of Barbados: St. Lawrence Gap, Oistins and beyond

The south coast runs from the edge of Bridgetown through Hastings, Rockley, Worthing, St. Lawrence Gap and Dover to Oistins and the windswept beaches near the airport. It is the busiest and most affordable part of the island for visitors, with a long boardwalk, plenty of guesthouses and apartments, and the famous Friday night fish fry. If you want easy buses, beaches and evenings out, start here.

Why stay on the south coast

The south coast suits almost everyone. The water is generally calm in the bays and livelier further east, there are good beaches every few minutes along the road, and you can choose from simple guesthouses, apartments, mid-range hotels and all inclusive resorts. It is close to the airport and to Bridgetown, and buses and route taxis run along the main road from early morning to late evening.

Hastings and Rockley

Closest to the city, **Hastings** and **Rockley** have the **Richard Haynes Boardwalk**, a wooden path along the sea that is perfect for an early walk or a sunset stroll. **Accra Beach** (Rockley Beach) is a lively public beach with vendors, lifeguards and boogie board waves. The area has supermarkets, cafes and a good mix of stays.

Worthing and Dover

**Worthing** is quieter and popular with long stay visitors, with **Sandy Beach** sheltered by a reef and ideal for children. **Dover Beach** is a long, wide stretch next to the Gap with water sports and gentle surf.

St. Lawrence Gap

**St. Lawrence Gap**, simply called the Gap, is a short strip of restaurants, bars and clubs that wakes up after dark. You will find everything from beach bars to fine dining, karaoke and live bands. It can be loud on weekends, so if you want quiet, stay at either end rather than in the middle.

Oistins

**Oistins** is a fishing town where the **Friday night fish fry** has become the island's most famous night out. Dozens of stalls grill and fry marlin, mahi mahi, tuna, swordfish and flying fish, served with macaroni pie, breadfruit or rice and peas, while music plays and older couples dance to oldies. It is busy with both locals and visitors, and Saturday is a calmer alternative. Look out for **Oistins Fish Festival** around Easter.

Miami Beach and Silver Sands

East of Oistins, **Miami Beach** (Enterprise Beach) has a calm side for swimming and a wilder side for watching waves, plus food vans in the shade. Further on, **Silver Sands** and **Long Beach** are windy, which makes them one of the best kitesurfing and windsurfing spots in the Caribbean, especially from December to June.

Things to do

Snorkel or take a turtle trip, learn to surf at **Freights Bay**, see the **Graeme Hall** wetlands from the road, or take a short drive to the clifftop **South Point Lighthouse**. A day in Bridgetown is a short bus ride away.

Food and drink

Beyond the fish fry, the south coast has beach bars, roti shops, bakeries and smart restaurants. Try fish cakes and Banks beer by the sea, a pudding and souse on Saturday, and a rum punch at sunset.

Practical tips

Buses and route taxis run along the Highway 7 main road. Use crossings, as traffic is steady. Watch the sea flags, as currents can be strong on the more open beaches, and keep valuables out of sight on the beach and in the Gap late at night.

Questions about the south coast

Is the south coast or west coast better in Barbados?

The south coast is livelier, better value and closer to the airport. The west coast has calmer water and a more polished, quieter feel. Many visitors pick the south for their first trip.

When is the Oistins fish fry?

The big night is Friday, with a quieter version on Saturday. Food is served most evenings at some stalls, but Friday has the full atmosphere.

Is St. Lawrence Gap safe?

It is busy and generally safe, but keep an eye on your drinks and valuables, decline offers of drugs and take a taxi back late at night if you are not staying nearby.

Where can I kitesurf in Barbados?

Silver Sands and Long Beach on the south coast have steady trade winds from about December to June and several schools nearby.
