The Savannah and the old city
The Queen's Park Savannah is the city's great open space, a huge circle of grass where people jog, fly kites and gather at dusk for coconut water and corn soup from the vendors along the edge. On its western side stand the Magnificent Seven, a row of grand mansions built in the early twentieth century. To the north are the Royal Botanic Gardens, among the oldest in the Americas, and the small Emperor Valley Zoo, both easy and calm with children.
Downtown, the Red House, home of Parliament, has been restored to its red Beaux Arts glory. Independence Square and the Brian Lara Promenade are the busy centre, with the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception at one end. The National Museum and Art Gallery on Frederick Street gives a quick grounding in Carnival, history and art. For views, head up to Fort George above St James.
Food and nightlife
Port of Spain eats on the street. In the morning, doubles vendors serve curried chickpeas in soft fried bread. At night, Western Main Road in St James fills with stalls selling corn soup, souse, pholourie, gyros and grilled meat, and the area stays lively late. Ariapita Avenue in Woodbrook is the main strip of bars, lounges and restaurants, busiest from Thursday to Saturday. Roti shops are everywhere; ask a local for their favourite.
Carnival
From just after New Year, the city builds toward Carnival Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. Steelbands rehearse in open air pan yards, fetes run most weekends, and the Savannah hosts Panorama, the national steelband final, and Dimanche Gras. J'Ouvert opens the street parade before dawn on Monday. If you plan to come for Carnival, book flights, rooms and costumes many months ahead.
Where to stay
Most visitors stay around the Savannah, in St Ann's, St Clair, Maraval or Woodbrook, or at the waterfront hotels on Wrightson Road. These areas are convenient and generally calmer. Chaguaramas, west of the city, suits sailors and anyone who wants the sea close by.
Staying safe
Crime is a real concern in parts of Port of Spain. Government travel advice warns against areas east of the city centre such as Laventille, Beetham, Sea Lots and Morvant, and against walking downtown after dark. Use taxis arranged through your hotel or a trusted app, keep valuables out of sight, and do not stop at isolated lookouts. Read current advice from your own government before you travel.
A suggested two day plan
On day one, start with doubles for breakfast, then walk the Botanic Gardens and the Savannah in the cool of the morning. Visit the National Museum and Art Gallery before lunch, take a taxi past the Red House and the Magnificent Seven, and finish at Fort George for the late afternoon view. In the evening, eat your way along Western Main Road in St James or settle into a restaurant on Ariapita Avenue.
On day two, head west to Chaguaramas for the boardwalk, a swim at Macqueripe Bay or a boat to the Gasparee Caves, then return for a sunset drink. If you are visiting between New Year and Carnival, ask your hotel which pan yards welcome visitors for rehearsals in the evening: hearing a full steel orchestra in its own yard is one of the best experiences in the country.
Shopping and souvenirs
Look for pepper sauce, chadon beni sauce, local chocolate, Angostura bitters, rum and steelpan recordings. The malls at Westmoorings and Long Circular are calm and air conditioned, while Charlotte Street and the Central Market show everyday city life best with a local friend.
Questions about Port of Spain
Is Port of Spain worth visiting?
Yes, for its food, music and Carnival, and as a base for the North Coast, Caroni and Chaguaramas. Most visitors spend two or three days there before heading to Tobago or the countryside.
Is Port of Spain safe for tourists?
It needs care. Stay in well known areas such as St Clair, Maraval, Woodbrook or near the Savannah, use trusted taxis, avoid the eastern districts named in government advice and do not walk around at night.
Where is the best street food in Port of Spain?
Western Main Road in St James at night, the Savannah vendors at dusk and doubles stands across the city in the morning are the classic starting points.
How do I get from Port of Spain to Tobago?
Take the inter island fast ferry from the Port of Spain ferry terminal or a short domestic flight from Piarco. Both book up at weekends and holidays, so reserve ahead.
