Mauritius destinations: where to go

Mauritius is small, but each coast has its own character. Start here to see how the capital, the beaches of the north, the mountain of Le Morne, the forests of the gorges and the historic south east fit together.

The capital

Port Louis is the island's busy harbour capital, with the Central Market, the UNESCO-listed Aapravasi Ghat, Chinatown and Le Caudan Waterfront. Most visitors come for a day.

The north

Grand Baie and the north coast have calm beaches like Pereybère and Trou aux Biches, catamaran trips to the islets, the Pamplemousses garden and the island's busiest nightlife.

The south west

Le Morne is the UNESCO-listed mountain above a turquoise lagoon, with kitesurfing, hiking, Chamarel's coloured earth and dolphins at Tamarin. Inland, Black River Gorges is the largest national park, with forest trails, waterfalls, rare birds and the sacred lake of Grand Bassin.

The south east

Mahébourg is a historic town near the airport, close to Blue Bay Marine Park and the nature reserve of Île aux Aigrettes.

How to combine them

A week works well with one beach base and day trips. With ten days or more, split your stay between two coasts, for example the north and the south west, or the east and the south west. Use the free trip planner to shape a route that fits.
