Jerudong and the coast: beaches near the capital

Brunei's northern coastline, a short drive from the capital, is where Bruneians go to relax. Jerudong has the vast Empire hotel and the Jerudong Park playground, Muara and Serasa have sandy beaches and water sports, and simple seafood restaurants by the shore serve grilled fish as the sun sets over the South China Sea. It is an easy escape from the city.

Why visit the coast

Brunei is not a classic beach destination, but its shoreline is long, clean and almost empty on weekdays. For families, the coast is where the country lets its hair down: picnics on the sand, children in the playground and weekend crowds at the seafood stalls. For travellers, it adds a relaxed half day to a city break.

Jerudong

The Empire Brunei, a palatial hotel built in the 1990s, sits on the coast west of the capital with marble halls, beachfront pools, a golf course and a cinema. Non guests can usually visit the restaurants and lobby, which are worth a look for their sheer scale. Nearby, Jerudong Park, the playground built as a royal gift to the nation, has rides, gardens and evening crowds; check current opening times before you go. The Jerudong beach and fish market are lively in the late afternoon.

Muara and Serasa

At the north eastern tip of the country, Muara is Brunei's port town. Pantai Muara is a long sandy beach with shady casuarina trees, and Serasa beach is the base for water sports, sailing and kayaking. Pantai Meragang, often called Crocodile Beach after a fence once put up for safety, is a long, quiet stretch good for sunset walks.

Other things to do

  • **Bukit Shahbandar Forest Recreation Park:** forest trails with views to the sea, popular with early morning runners.
  • **Tungku beach:** a seaside road with food stalls and sunset views close to Gadong.
  • **Seafood:** grilled fish, prawns and squid at simple coastal restaurants.
  • **Diving:** wreck and reef dives off Brunei's coast can be arranged with licensed operators.

Safety by the sea

Swimming conditions change with the monsoon. Rip currents can be strong on some beaches, and jellyfish appear at times. Swim where locals do, follow any flags and never swim alone or after dark. Respect local dress norms on public beaches: swimwear is fine at hotel pools, but cover up when away from the water.

Where to stay

The Empire Brunei is the main resort stay on this coast. Otherwise, stay in Bandar Seri Begawan and visit for the afternoon.

A coastal afternoon

A simple plan is to leave the capital after lunch, when the heat starts to ease. Stop at Bukit Shahbandar for a short forest walk with sea views, then continue to the Empire Brunei to see its grand lobby and enjoy a drink by the sea. As the sun drops, walk on Pantai Jerudong or join locals at the seafood stalls along the coast. Families can finish the evening at Jerudong Park, which comes alive after dark when it is cooler. Alternatively, head north east to Muara and Serasa for a swim, a kayak or a picnic on the sand, ending with grilled fish at a simple seaside restaurant. Weekends are livelier, while weekdays are quiet and peaceful.

What to bring

Pack sunscreen, a hat, water, insect repellent for the evening, and a light cover up for walking away from the sand. For water sports at Serasa, book ahead with licensed operators and check sea conditions before you go, particularly between November and January.
