Soldeu and Grandvalira: Andorra's ski heartland

Soldeu is a ski village high in the east of Andorra, and the best known gateway to Grandvalira, the largest ski area in the Pyrenees. Grandvalira stretches from Encamp and Canillo through Soldeu, El Tarter and Grau Roig to Pas de la Casa on the French border, linking villages with very different characters along one long mountain road.

Why go

For many British, Spanish and French skiers, Andorra means Grandvalira. The area combines wide, well groomed slopes for beginners and intermediates, respected ski schools with English speaking instructors, and a lively village scene. In summer the same mountains become a quieter world of meadows, lakes and marked trails, with gondolas lifting walkers and mountain bikers up to the ridges.

The ski sectors

**Soldeu** has a gondola straight from the village to the slopes above, with a big ski school and nursery areas. **El Tarter**, just below, is gentle and good for families. **Grau Roig**, high and set in a forested bowl, often has the most reliable snow and a freestyle park. **Pas de la Casa** sits right on the French border with long, open runs and the busiest nightlife. **Canillo** and **Encamp** connect by gondola, including the long **Funicamp**, and are good value bases. Grandvalira Resorts also includes Ordino Arcalís and Pal Arinsal on the other side of the country. Check the official site for pass types, opening dates and lift status.

Ski schools and families

Lessons are a big reason first-time skiers choose Andorra. Book group classes and childcare well before school holidays, which fill quickly. Hire equipment in the village or near the gondolas, and look for packages that bundle lessons, passes and gear.

Après and nightlife

As the lifts close, **Bar L'Abarset** at El Tarter turns into a party on the snow, and in Soldeu, **Fat Albert** is the classic live music bar. Pas de la Casa is louder and goes later, with clubs aimed at young crowds from France and Spain. Families will find calmer evenings in Canillo and El Tarter.

Canillo's sights

On the way up, stop in **Canillo** for the **Mirador Roc del Quer**, a glass walkway over the valley, and the **Pont Tibetà**, a very long suspension footbridge. The Romanesque church of **Sant Joan de Caselles** and the national sanctuary of **Meritxell**, rebuilt by architect Ricardo Bofill, are nearby. The **Palau de Gel** ice rink is a good rainy day option.

Summer hiking

From Soldeu, trails lead into the **Vall d'Incles**, a wide green valley, and on to the **Juclar lakes**, with a staffed mountain hut beside them. Grau Roig has easy walks to high lakes. Start early, carry layers and waterproofs, and turn back if storms build in the afternoon.

Food

On the slopes, mountain restaurants serve hearty dishes, and in Soldeu you can choose between casual pizza and burger spots, traditional bordes and fine dining at the Sport Hotel Hermitage. Try escudella, trinxat and grilled meats.

Where to stay

Stay in Soldeu for ski in convenience and après, El Tarter for families, Canillo or Encamp for better value and gondola access, and Pas de la Casa if nightlife matters most. Book early for Christmas, New Year, February half term and Easter.

Practical tips

The road over the **Port d'Envalira**, the highest main road pass in the Pyrenees, can close or require snow chains in storms. Ski buses link the villages in winter. Sun at altitude is strong year round, so bring sunscreen and sunglasses.

A suggested summer day

Take the gondola up from Soldeu or Canillo in the morning, walk a ridge or lake trail, and come down for a late lunch. In the afternoon, stop at the Roc del Quer viewpoint and the Pont Tibetà in Canillo, then visit the Meritxell sanctuary on the way back down the valley.
