Shkodër and the Albanian Alps: a first-timer's guide to the north

Northern Albania pairs Shkodër, a relaxed lakeside city and cultural capital of the north, with the Accursed Mountains, a range of limestone peaks and isolated valleys. The classic route takes the ferry across Komani Lake to Valbona, then hikes over a high pass to Theth. It is one of the great mountain journeys in Europe, best from June to September.

Why go

The north is where Albania feels wildest. Villages of stone houses sit beneath sheer peaks, shepherds move flocks in summer, and guesthouses cook almost everything from their own gardens. Shkodër itself is easygoing and flat, full of bicycles, cafés and history.

Shkodër

**Rozafa Castle** stands on a hill above the meeting of three rivers, with a legend of a woman walled into its foundations and wide views over **Lake Shkodër**. In town, the pedestrian **Kole Idromeno street** is lined with restored houses and cafés, and the **Marubi National Museum of Photography** holds a remarkable archive of Albanian life from the nineteenth century on. The **Site of Witness and Memory**, in a former prison of the secret police, tells the story of repression under communism. Rent a bicycle to ride to the lakeshore at **Shiroka** for fish and sunsets, or to the **Mes Bridge**, an elegant Ottoman stone bridge.

Komani Lake

The **Komani Lake ferry** travels about two to three hours up a dammed river between steep green walls, often compared to a Norwegian fjord. Ferries usually run from Komani to Fierzë in the summer season, connecting with furgons to Valbona. Departure is early, so most people take a dawn furgon from Shkodër organised through their guesthouse. Schedules change each year, so confirm in advance.

Valbona and Theth

**Valbona** is a long valley of meadows and peaks with scattered guesthouses. **Theth** is a tiny village with a stone church, a lock in tower where men once sheltered during blood feuds, and walks to the **Grunas waterfall** and the **Blue Eye of Theth**, a cold turquoise pool. The **Valbona Pass hike** links the two in a day of roughly six to eight hours, climbing to about eighteen hundred metres. It is well marked and popular, but steep, so start early, carry water and check the weather. Luggage can often be sent around by vehicle through guesthouses.

Safety in the mountains

Mountain weather changes fast, phone signal is patchy and rescue can take time. Do not hike alone, tell your guesthouse your plans, and avoid high routes outside summer, when snow can linger well into June. The road to Theth is now paved, but mountain roads are still narrow and winding.

Where to stay

Shkodër has hostels, boutique hotels and guesthouses in the old centre. In Theth and Valbona, family guesthouses with half board are the norm; book ahead in July and August. Some open only from late spring to early autumn.

Getting there and around

Buses run regularly from Tirana to Shkodër, about two hours. From Shkodër, furgons serve Theth daily in summer, and the Komani ferry route reaches Valbona. A popular loop is Shkodër, Komani ferry, Valbona, hike to Theth, then back to Shkodër by furgon over three to four days. Outside summer, transport to the valleys is limited.

Practical tips

Bring cash, since there are no cash machines in Theth or Valbona and cards are rarely accepted. Pack layers, rain gear and proper hiking boots even in summer. Download offline maps before leaving Shkodër, and confirm furgon times the evening before you travel.

Questions about Shkodër and the Albanian Alps

When is the best time to hike from Valbona to Theth?

Usually late June to mid September, when the pass is free of snow and guesthouses are open. Early summer can still have snow patches near the top.

Do I need a guide for the Valbona Pass?

The trail is well marked and walked by many people in summer, so fit hikers often go independently. A local guide is wise if you are inexperienced or the weather is uncertain.

Does the Komani ferry run all year?

Services are reliable in the summer season but limited or irregular at other times. Confirm the current schedule through your guesthouse before you plan.

Is Shkodër worth visiting on its own?

Yes. Rozafa Castle, the Marubi photography museum, the lake and easy cycling make two pleasant days even without the mountains.

Facts checked . Fees, schedules and entry rules change, so always confirm the latest with the official source.
