Why visit Grodno
If Minsk shows you the Soviet face of Belarus, Grodno shows you the older one. The city was part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth for centuries, and its Catholic, Orthodox and Jewish heritage is visible on almost every corner. It is compact, calm and easy to explore on foot in a day or two.
The main sights
**Saint Francis Xavier Cathedral**, often called the Farny Church, dominates Sovetskaya Square. Its baroque interior is a riot of gilded altars, and its tower holds one of the oldest working clocks in Europe. Across the square, a small **Pharmacy Museum** preserves one of the oldest pharmacies in the region.
**The Old Castle and New Castle** face each other on a bluff above the river. The Old Castle dates back to medieval times and was a royal residence of King Stefan Batory; the New Castle is an 18th century palace. Both hold museums of local history, and the views over the Neman are lovely.
**Kalozha Church**, dedicated to Saints Boris and Gleb, is one of the oldest churches in Belarus, dating from the 12th century. Part of it collapsed into the river in the 19th century and was rebuilt in wood, giving it an unusual look.
**The Great Synagogue** is a vast building restored in recent years, a reminder that Jews once made up a large share of the city's population before the Holocaust. Ask locally about visiting hours and exhibitions.
Walk **Sovetskaya Street**, the pedestrian heart of the old town, and look for the **Bernardine Church and Monastery** on the edge of the river bluff, and the bold modern **Regional Drama Theatre** near the castles.
Beyond the city
The **Augustow Canal**, a 19th century waterway with locks running through forests towards Poland, is a beautiful area for cycling and walking. A cross-border visa-free scheme around the canal has existed in the past, but its status changes, so check official sources before relying on it.
To the east, **Lida Castle** is a square brick fortress from the 14th century that hosts medieval festivals. Grodno is also a convenient start or end point for a trip that includes Brest and the castles of Mir and Nesvizh.
Events
Every two years in June, the **Festival of National Cultures** fills the streets with costumes, music, dancing and food from dozens of communities living in Belarus. It is one of the most cheerful events in the country.
Food
Grodno's food mixes Belarusian, Polish and Lithuanian influences. Look for draniki, kalduny (stuffed dumplings), soups and pastries. Cafés along Sovetskaya Street are good for a break between churches, and the central market is the place for local cheese and smoked meats.
Getting there and around
Trains and buses link Grodno with Minsk, and journeys take several hours depending on the service. Grodno has a small airport, but it has few or no regular international flights. The old town is easy to walk; app taxis cover longer distances.
Border notes
Grodno is close to crossings into Poland and Lithuania, both of which have been closed or restricted at times. Check the latest status with official sources if you plan to arrive or leave overland, and never photograph border areas.
