Why go
This is the most atmospheric corner of the islands. The deep, hurricane sheltered harbour made it the Royal Navy's main base in the Eastern Caribbean in the eighteenth century, and the stone buildings still stand: storehouses, officers' quarters and the pillars of an old boathouse. Today it is a hub for superyachts and regattas, ringed by hills you can walk.
Nelson's Dockyard
**Nelson's Dockyard** is part of Nelson's Dockyard National Park, and an entry ticket covers the dockyard and several sites around it. Walk the quays, look into the restored buildings and visit the **Dockyard Museum** in the old naval officers' house, which tells the story of the enslaved Africans and skilled workers who built and ran the yard, as well as Horatio Nelson, who served here as a young captain in the 1780s. The **Admiral's Inn** and the **Copper and Lumber Store** are both historic buildings that now work as hotels, bars and restaurants.
Shirley Heights
Above the harbour, **Shirley Heights** was a military lookout and gun battery. On Sunday evenings the **Lookout** hosts a famous party: a steel pan band at sunset, then reggae and soca, with barbecue and rum punch as the sun drops behind Falmouth Harbour. It is touristy, cheerful and genuinely beautiful. Many hotels run transfers, or take a taxi and agree the return time. Away from the party, explore the **Blockhouse** ruins and the military cemetery on the clifftops.
Walks and beaches
The **Middle Ground trail** climbs from Galleon Beach over the headland to Shirley Heights, with superb views of both harbours. A shorter path leads from the dockyard to **Fort Berkeley** at the harbour mouth. For swimming, **Galleon Beach** is sheltered and calm, and **Pigeon Point** near Falmouth is a shallow public beach that local families love at weekends. Strong walkers can hike to **Rendezvous Bay**, a wild beach with no facilities.
Regattas and events
Late April and early May bring the **Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta** and **Antigua Sailing Week**, when the harbours fill with boats and the village parties every night. In December the **Antigua Charter Yacht Show** gathers luxury yachts from around the world. Book rooms well ahead for any of these weeks.
Food and drink
English Harbour has some of the island's best restaurants for its size. Expect French style beach lunches at **Catherine's Café Plage**, generous plates at **Trappas**, waterside dinners at **Pillars** among the old boathouse columns, and late nights at **Abracadabra** in season. Out of season, from June to October, some places close or keep shorter hours, so check before you go.
Further afield
The south coast road west of Falmouth leads to Old Road and the rainforest of **Fig Tree Drive**, with fruit stalls, a canopy zip line tour and banana groves. East of English Harbour, the road continues to Half Moon Bay on the Atlantic side, easy to combine in one day.
Practical tips
The area is spread over two harbours, so a taxi or water taxi helps between them. Paths around Shirley Heights are rocky and steep in places: wear proper shoes and start early before the heat. Bring cash in small notes for the Sunday party and village bars.
Where to stay
Stay inside the dockyard at the Admiral's Inn or the Copper and Lumber Store for history on your doorstep, choose waterside suites at Falmouth Harbour for space, or head west to beach resorts at Old Road such as Curtain Bluff and Carlisle Bay. Use our places to visit list and the free trip planner to fit the south coast into your trip.
